Sigmund Freud
Do you know the book by Sigmund Freud called 'General Introduction to Psychoanalysis'? Freud wrote about how strong the unconscious mind is, and how you can influence it. He was the uncle of Edward Bernays. Bernays took Freud’s ideas to implement them in his business.

He came up with strategies to influence both individuals and groups, and their buying decisions. Instead of presenting products with facts, he wanted to get into their unconscious desires.

Torches of Freedom
In the 20th century, people looked down upon a woman who smoked. This means that very few women smoked. The problem was that this was half of the market for cigarettes!
What Bernays did, was using his knowledge about psychological analysis to solve this. He hired a group of young women to light up cigarettes during the Easter Parade. There were thousands of people there, including the press.
Bernays then told the press that these women were smoking as a form of protest against discrimination and that they wanted the right to vote. He called the cigarettes 'Torches of Freedom'.
One day after the Easter Parade, most well-known newspapers in America had this news on their front pages. The effect was that many people believed that by smoking, they would agree with their protest.
Women started smoking again as a declare for support. By smoking, they felt more powerful and independent. They started to get emotionally attached to it. This was exactly what Bernays wanted.

How does this story relate to NVIDIA graphics cards? An object or brand can give people a certain status. It becomes a powerful symbol of how they want to be seen by others. It is not always the facts that sell. For example, NVIDIA managed to sell loads of a mid-range GPU when the stats weren't there yet. On the home tab, AMD immediately gives you an overview of the most important specifications and the last game you've played. On the Home tab of NVIDIA in their 'GeForce Experience' software, you will not have this complete overview and you have to click through the software to see more details.
NVIDIA’s user interfaces immediately show the games you play, and when you click on the game you can optimize the settings to get the best potential for that game. It has a special driver tab to check if there are any updates. AMD has the same options to tweak the settings for the best gaming performance. If you want to update your AMD driver, you can simply do that in the home overview.

Years ago, the user interfaces had more differences. I was using AMD back then and found the older user interface not very efficient. I struggled a bit to find the option to update my drivers. AMD officially started in 1969. They first focused on producing microdevices, chips, and semiconductors. They also served the army, logistics, and telecommunication. When they bought an ATI company that was making graphics processors, AMD started focusing on GPUs and CPUs.
NVIDIA started 24 years later in 1993 and is the founder of GPU’s. For both AMD and NVIDIA, the business exploded between 1999-2000. This was also an excellent year for people to start their own tech companies.
Mark Cuban was very lucky with this for example. But after the year 2000, something terrible happened. The ‘Internet Bubble’. Also known as the dot-com boom. Whatever suits you fancy.
The Internet Bubble
The use of the internet and computers started to grow massively. The internet bubble was caused by excessive speculation of Internet-related companies.
In other words, there was a massive growth in the use and adoption of the internet. Many other companies related to AMD and NVIDIA didn’t survive this bubble, because everything with .com in the end, was seen as a golden goose: a simple way to become rich.
The problem was that people didn't look if these businesses were profitable enough.
Many of them weren't profitable which made many people panic after some time. They were afraid that companies couldn’t deliver growth. A company has to be financially healthy. When a company has a lot of stocks but it doesn’t fit the healthy financial image, investors will leave.
Companies started to have high debts with made them go bankrupt. This made people want to sell their stocks. But when nobody wants to buy your stock, the value decreases massively and it may reach a value of 0.
The value of a company is based on how many people are willing to give money for it. When this amount is so small, companies won’t receive enough funding for their expenses and future R&D projects.
The Duopoly Was Born
If this internet bubble hadn't existed we would see a lot more brands on the market of GPUs and CPUs. Both NVIDIA and AMD managed to survive this bubble, but they still lost a lot of money. Of course, it was a disaster and brought a lot of major headaches. But on the other hand, the competition is now more than halved. This opened ways for them to recover and grow to their best potential.
And so they did. AMD and NVIDIA created a duopoly and are dominating the gaming market together. There are still a few small players in the market but this is more or less irrelevant. Nowadays, when you go for a graphics card NVIDIA and AMD are the 2 choices, right?
Without the internet bubble, there was a high chance they would be far from what they are right now!

It notices when you look at your phone or when you stare in a certain direction that you can’t see the cyclist next to you. This is called surrounding awareness. A cool feature is lip-reading.
For example, if you have passengers with you that are quite noisy, the AI car reads your lips and knows exactly what you said.
Research from the University of Oxford inspired NVIDIA on this. They achieved a lipreading capability that was 95% accurate.
We think that in the future you can expect cars saying something like: ’’You are almost home. Would you like me to open your garage door?’’
Not only robots but a lot more autonomous machines will follow too. You can think of intelligent video analytics to scan and understand the environment to get real-time insights into traffic. But as we’ve said before, AMD can provide you with a lot of other functionalities. AMD offers both an excellent gaming performance, and great productivity for content creation. They also do a very well job at power consumption and their pricing suits their value.
AMD's CPUs are better for you when you like to do multiple things at once. A.k.a. multitasking. For instance, when you like to record your game or edit videos: you should go for AMD, and you'll get very good value for money.

Now NVIDIA joins the party again! They can be excluded from CPUs since they don't deliver such good CPUs like Intel or AMD. Remember, they are dominating with their GPUs. When choosing a GPU you should either pick NVIDIA or AMD.
